Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service Limited (BWAHS) is the lead specialist Aboriginal specific family violence service in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) and provides a range of services and programs to Aboriginal families who are impacted by family violence. BWAHS is located in Lilydale and services seven LGAs across the EMR. Booroondara, Manningham, Monash, Whitehorse, Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges.

BWAHS is governed by a board of directors and is currently in the process of transitioning from its auspice arrangement to become an independent Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation.

BWAHS BOD currently has a vacancy on the board for one male Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander individual who lives within the seven LGA areas of the EMR and would like to submit an expression of interest to join our board. The BWAHS board ensures it has gender and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander equity to meet the objectives of the organisation.

The BWAHS constitution requires its board members to:

1. Have knowledge and expertise relevant to, and be committed to the purpose and activities of the company (BWHAS)

2. Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander descent

3. Not be an employee of the company (BWAHS)

Victims of Crime Awareness Week was launched in Australia in 2006 by the Victorian Homicide Victims Support Group.

Victims of Crime Awareness Week highlights the issues faced by people affected by crime, and raises awereness of the services, programs and laws in Victoria to assist victims and their families.

Public hearing into Victorian state run youth training and reception centres

The Royal Commission will hold a public hearing in Melbourne from Monday 17 August 2015. The public hearing will inquire into the experiences of former child residents at Turana Youth Training Centre, Winlaton Youth Training Centre and Baltara Reception Centre between the 1960s and early 1990s. The scope and purpose of the public hearing is to inquire into: 1. The experiences of former child residents at Turana Youth Training Centre (Turana), Winlaton Youth Training Centre (Winlaton) and Baltara Reception Centre (Baltara) between the 1960s and early 1990s. 2. The responses of Turana, Winlaton and Baltara and their staff members to child sexual abuse of former child residents of Turana, Winlaton and Baltara between the 1960s and early 1990s.

3. The past and current policies and procedures of the:

a. Victoria Police; and b. Department of Health and Human Services Victoria (and its relevant predecessors)

in relation to children and young people in youth training, reception and youth justice centres in the State of Victoria. 4. Any related matters.

Any person or institution who believes that they have a direct and substantial interest in the scope and purpose of the public hearing is invited to lodge a written application for leave to appear at the public hearing by 3 August 2015.

Applications for leave to appear should be made using the form available on the Royal Commission website entitled ‘Application for Leave to Appear at the Royal Commission’ and include a short submission setting out the basis on which it is said the applicant has a substantial and direct interest in appearing. Over the last few months, I have had the priviledge to take part in the launch of SEED. SEED is an organisation made up of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are committed to fighting climate change and preserving our land and our culture for future generations.

This is the first movement in history where young Indigenous people have taken the lead and been at the forefront of this fight. Already we have participated in blocking coal ships from coming in to Newcastle port, delivered our declaration to the major four banks in Australia to ask them to NOT invest in fossel fuels and come up with an action plan on how to spread awareness and how to get Australia, one of the sunniest and windiest countries, to be completly run on renewable energy!

This is an issue that doesn's just effect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, it effects everyone. We all relie on the land to live.
